International meetings & Educational Opportunities

IAO offers a variety of top-tier educational opportunities. Courses, workshops, and joint sessions are organized in collaboration with other organizations and Associations from all over the world. Topics include multidisciplinary cancer management, palliative care, clinical research, cancer control in primary care, and more.

1. International Palliative Care Workshops

IAO collaborates with oncology societies around the world to deliver palliative care education to health care providers. International Palliative Care Workshops (IPCW) cover topics including:

  • Communication skills
  • Pain assessment
  • Symptom management

Palliative Care Resource Center

IAO has launched a palliative care resource center. The resource center provides a central location for a range of reference materials for physicians and patients.

Palliative Care in Oncology

The world needs to provide palliative cancer care to relieve the suffering of patients and families living with cancer. IAO recognizes that further efforts are needed to ensure the delivery of high-quality end-of-life care to patients. IAO is committed to facilitating the integration of palliative cancer care into existing health care systems worldwide in order to realize the vision of comprehensive cancer care by 2020. IAO offers a range of resources to help providers integrate primary palliative care policies and practices into the oncology setting. All of the resources underscore the critical need to improve palliative care in oncology.

2. Multidisciplinary Cancer Management Courses (MCMC)

Multidisciplinary Cancer Management Courses (MCMC) improve cancer care globally by:

  • Promoting interdisciplinary cancer management among specialists, surgeons, pathologists, and members of the oncology caregiving team
  • Teaching multidisciplinary management of the most prevalent cancer types in the host country
  • Providing mock tumor boards and education on different aspects of treatment, from initial presentation to end of life care

"Train the Trainer" Program

"Train the Trainer" refers to a 1-2 day optional training workshop held before the MCMC program. The program is designed to help participants:

  • Increase their understanding of multidisciplinary cancer care concepts;
  • Learn effective teaching methods and practical skills for course implementation;
  • Understand general teaching principles and elements of multidisciplinary treatment;
  • Discuss implementation strategies for organizing trainings within their own communities and institutions

3. Cancer Control in Primary Care Courses

Countries with limited oncology resources are facing a rise in cancer incidence. To address this growing need, all sectors of the healthcare system must collaborate on exercising cancer control.

The Cancer Control in Primary Care course provides primary health care providers with practical and specific knowledge that can be put into daily practice. Course topics focus on:

  • Early detection and referral networks
  • Cancer prevention
  • Communication
  • Local resources

4. International Clinical Trials Workshops

The International Clinical Trials Workshops (ICTW) support cancer research in low- and middle-income countries by developing research skills among early-career researchers. Workshop topics cover:

  • Clinical study methodologies
  • Statistics for investigators
  • Research Ethics
  • Regulatory issues

5.Joint Sessions & Endorsements

IAO Endorsement

IAO endorsement indicates that IAO officially endorses the education program of another organization. The endorsement also conveys that IAO grants permission to the organization to use the IAO logo on the program brochure and other program-related material.

For international meetings that receive an IAO endorsement, the educational program is developed primarily by local or regional organizers. The educational program is reviewed and approved by the IAO Executive Board Committee.

IAO Joint Session

IAO Joint Session is an educational session held during a conference or the annual meeting of the requesting organization. The session includes speakers from both IAO and the requesting organization. Both organizations mutually agree upon topics and speakers.

IAO has a limited number of funds each year to support speaker attendance at joint sessions. Organizations interested in applying for funding must indicate this on their application.
